The singer couple Girija Ravishankar and Srinidhi Koushik Kanagal are sought-after artists from the classical South Indian (Carnatic) music tradition. Both were introduced to music by their mothers at a very early age. Thereafter, they learnt nuances of this music over twenty years, including from maestro Padmashri R N Thyagarajan, whose musical tradition stems from Tyagaraja, the famous 18th century composer. The couple regularly perform on large and small stages in India, the USA and Europe. At Museum Rietberg, they will present various traditional compositions and explore aspects of ‘manodharma’ (improvisation), a special feature of this genre.
The singer couple will be accompanied by the talented violinist A.G.A. Gnanasundaram, a student of the legendary maestro Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman. The equally talented Chidambaram (Chidu) Narayanan, a regular at the Museum Rietberg, will accompany them on the mridangam.
